As to the National allowing public play, I live in Augusta and it took me 35 years to play a round there. This suggestion is like the Vatican having a 'Baptist Preacher Day' every Tuesday.....just ain't gonna happen.

Just a thought - if Augusta were to allow public play, would they be able to limit to men only? Thin end of the wedge and all that?

It's sad that a player with so much talent has such a poor attitude. If ever a star needed a sports psychologist, it's Garcia. Conditions are the same for everyone, mudballs not withstanding. It's called rub of the green. Fellow countrymen Ballesteros and Olazabal must be sick after hearing about this little tantrum.

Garcia just cost bookmakers a bunch of money because nobody will bet on him now. And with that attitude he has zero chance of ever winning.

Thank you, Mr. Tucker, for being one of the very, very, very few golf commentators out there who is actually fair to Sergio Garcia. Yes, he's a big cry baby. Yes, he almost never takes any responsibility for the flaws of his game. Yes, he's a complete headcase that would play much better if he could just calm the hell down and get out of his own head. Nevertheless, that's who he is. It's who he is in life and it's who he is in golf and he should at least get some semblance of credit for being who he is, where he is, whether people like it or not. It seems like any golfer who is not Tiger Woods is not allowed to speak his mind or have an opinion. When Tiger throws a fit, it's passion for the game. It's dedication. It's drive. When someone else does it, it's lack of sportsmanship, or whining, or complaining too much. It's a temper tantrum. Sergio is far from the first golfer to say Augusta is overly tricky. I guarantee you, if Tiger Woods got on television and made the exact same complaint - word for word - it would be considered a fair assessment and the course would most likely change. Nothing against Tiger, who is a master of the craft of golf...it just gets tiring how everything Tiger does is okay and everything the rest of them do is critiqued to the nth degree. Personally, I find it refreshing that a big name golfer actually had the gall to say they didn't like hallowed Augusta. Good for him.

And I agree with your assessment that every course should open some time to the public. Golf by its foundations is an elitist sport...but the days of that level of elite discrimination should be over. If we're letting the likes of Boo Weekley in, surely we can allow Joe Plumber to golf a twilight round at Augusta on a Tuesday afternoon, no?

Sergio is what he is. He's obviously not trying to please anyone or be diplomatic. That's not what he's about and lets face it, it's not what most want him to be. Any more than we want John Daly to be erudite and elegant. Let Padraig Harrington be polite and reserved and appropriatley understated and let Sergio whine. We need personalities in this game.

And yes, it does suck to know I'll never be able to play this particularly gorgeous course. (not that I'd ever even speculate on what my score might be.
