Lone Star State is big enough for both new and old Valero Texas Open hosts: Westin La Cantera and TPC San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – I feel like we’re all still digesting Masters action and not quite ready for the next week. But the Valero Texas Open is here, enjoying its prime spot formerly reserved for The Heritage on Hilton Head Island.
We just posted my feature for GolfChannel.com on the Westin La Cantera post-Valero Texas Open. It was the big resort in town for 15 years until the 1,001-room, 36-hole JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country and TPC San Antonio came along. La Cantera may have passed off the Open, but the property is better than ever. The two golf courses are a lot of fun, Troon Golf managed to deliver top conditions, and tee times are priced to move. La Cantera’s ace in the hole is their food-and-beverage scene. This is Texas after all, where you won’t go hungry.
Curious about the new JW Marriott? I visited last year and posted this feature story on the mighty, tech-savvy resort.
Also, Mike Bailey and I, both Texas residents, discuss which public course is the toughest in the Lone Star State in Golf Channel Punch Shots.
Frankly, when the winds are up in the Hill Country like they so often are, every course feels like a beast.
