Follow your Alma Mater to the NCAA Tournament's March Madness - and play golf too
SAN ANTONIO – If you’re like me, the thought of watching March Madness is a tad sickening.
But if you didn’t go to Indiana University and you’re team wasn’t a gigantic, 3-15 Big Ten failure in 2010-2011 that got lapped by the hoops powerhouse of Northwestern, you may very well be headed to the Big Dance to watch your team in action.
We just published a new feature on March Madness golf destinations at GolfChannel.com that highlights some of the best golf options in the vicinity of each tournament host city. This may come in handy if you are say, a Butler alum; a college with a fraction of the resources, alumni and tradition of the candy-striped scrappers an hour south of Indy, yet still put together a better squad year-in, year-out.
Of course, some tournament sites are better than others. San Antonio (where I am now and it was 84 degrees today at Westin La Cantera), Tampa and Tucson are primo spots for golf in March. Cleveland and Newark? Eh…
And if your college goes all the way to the Final Four? You can punch your ticket to Houston. It’s a city with an airport (two actually) that usually has cheap flights to just about anywhere. The golf options are plentiful and the weather should be ideal. And if you fly Southwest Airlines into Hobby Airport, your bags fly free, so may as well bring your sticks.
