Pebble Beach vs. Bandon Dunes: Reader compares the two American links giants
Pebble Beach Golf Links and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort are closely linked, if only because they share the same Pacific Ocean coastline and both resorts have become regulars among many golf course rankings’ best resort golf courses in America.
Reader Tom Wattle recently played them and shared his thoughts with us here at WorldGolf.com. Wattle rated all four courses – Bandon Dunes, Bandon Trails, Pacific Dunes and Pebble Beach – five-star experiences on their course pages, even though his comments on Pebble Beach weren’t 100 percent positive:
The ocean holes are beautiful. It is unfortunate that fifty percent of the lay out is populated with unsightley architecture. It seemed that I payed over six hundred dollars (caddie included) for a home tour of Pebble Beach. I prefer the endless beauty and comfort I found when playing in Bandon.
Upon contacting Tom further, I asked him to elaborate more on the experience, and he continued to echo Bandon’s praises, speaking highly of the incredible terrain that I’ve written can even put parts of Scotland to shame.
“Rolling sand dunes that might resemble something akin to Scotland,” described Tom. “Shore pines that amaze us by how they can grow in sand alone, stunning views north and south, five, ten, twenty miles up and down the coast not a road or house in site.”
Wattle seemed most impressed with the overall atmosphere at Bandon that doesn’t detract for a second from the game and camaraderie among other players here for a pure golf retreat.
“You look around and there are golfers here,” he wrote. “The hack from Eugene. The mad slicer from San Francisco and you realize that golf is what Bandon is about not turning a corporate profit.”
It’s amazing how $250 golf courses can appear to be charity cases compared to Pebble Beach in the eyes of the traveling golfer…
We always love to hear feedback from golfers on our golf course guide page, so be sure to tell us what you think about Pebble Beach, Bandon, or the course down the road from your house.
