Time for Boo Weekley to get his Ryder Cup game face on
Boo Weekley has two solid finishes in a row, 10th at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans today and 12th last week at Harbour Town’s Verizon Heritage.
Now it’s time to take it up a notch if he wants any shot at making the USA Ryder Cup team later this year. Team USA needs him as much, if not more than Tiger Woods for the 2010 matches in Wales.
Weekley is the ultimate Ryder Cup teammate because he relaxes the heck out of everyone around him. And when he’s playing well, he’s tough to beat, especially when the crowds is on his side and he gets into the head of competitors like Lee Westwood, who was literally “spooked” during Sunday singles at Valhalla when a fan in a ghost costume jumped in front of him and screamed “Boooooooo!”
Together Woods and Weekley would bring two major distractions across the pond and it’d favor the U.S. greatly.
After his 3-0-1 domination at Valhalla Golf Club, I was pulling for Boo to do some serious damage in 2009, maybe even win a major, but injuries and equipment changes made him lay an egg. He may have been eating a lot of eggs too. By the looks of his belly, it looks like he’s spent a lot of time around the BBQ.
Currently in 52nd place in Team USA Ryder Cup standings, he needs to have a few good finishes, preferably one or two in majors, to get the attention of Captain Corey Pavin. If Boo is anywhere in the Top 20 in Ryder Cup standings and playing halfway decent, you have to take him on the team. But it’s up to Boo to show he’s got a killer instinct - at least enough to make a case to be on the 2010 team.
“I feel like a dog that somebody done stuck a needle to and it juiced me up like I’ve been running around a Greyhound track chasing one of them bunnies.”
Boo made that comment during the event in 2008, and he hasn’t had the needle stuck into him in sometime. Someone needs to remind him it’s now or never if he’s going to get to the Ryder Cup again.
