I only played one golf course in Kuala Lumpur last December while in Malaysia. The rest of my time was spent two hours south in historic Melaka.
But the one club I did visit while in the country’s largest metropolis was a doozy: Saujana Golf & Country Club just outside of town. It’s also host to the European Tour this week for the Maybank Malaysian Open, headlined by American Anthony Kim, now a card-carrying member of the tour so he can compete in the lucrative Race to Dubai.
In K.L., Royal Selangor is considered the most prestigious club, thanks mostly to it’s 100-year history and location in the heart of the city. But if you want the best golf within the city, head to Saujana. The club was the brain child of the Malaysian government back in the 1980s as they were trying to attract more business development. They built a beautiful golf club, host to two championship golf courses and a clubhouse that’s breathtaking. I had my best lunch of my whole trip on their patio.
I didn’t play the Palm Course, which is hosting the tournament this week. Instead, we played the Bunga Raya and it was still very good, set through thick, rolling jungle. I’m told the Palm is better but not by much. I’m not sure it could be. Click here for my full review.
I’ll be sure to tune in to some coverage over the week and will be anxious to hear some players’ thoughts on Malaysia. It’s quite a destination full of scenery, delicious street food and more. Click here for some of my recent articles from my December trip.
