Place your bets now! Will Michelle Wie win an LPGA event in 2009?

Thursday January 29, 2009 | 03:28:28 pm 302 words, 11016 views

2009 is going to be different for Michelle Wie, we know that much. She’s finally earned her tour card, so we can’t say she doesn’t belong on on the LPGA Tour anymore.

But Wie’s not out of the woods quite yet. She still needs to get the 1000-pound gorilla off her back and win her first professional event that, at one point in her career, seemed inevitable. These days, it’s hard to say a win is a sure thing, especially after a poor 2008 full of missed cuts, DQs and blow-up rounds.

So in a couple weeks, Wie begins her 2009 campaign in her home state of Hawaii at the SBS Open. She’ll play a full schedule in 2009 on the LPGA and by all accounts will spent little-to-no-time messing with the men’s professional tours. With Annika Sorenstam out of the picture this year, the LPGA will certainly be hoping Wie can step in and fill that shadow with the help of Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and other young aces.

So here’s the million dollar question: Does Michelle Wie breakthrough in 2009 and win her first LPGA event?

I say….NO.

Hate to be a hater, but here’s why: She couldn’t even win at Q-School in December, where the talent is certainly inferior to the LPGA talent, which keeps getting better. In fact, there are scores of young Michelle Wie’s on tour now like Angela Park and last year’s emergence of Ji-Yai Shin. This year, another teen is sure to break out with a few wins.

So everyone from Wie Warriors to Wie Haters, cast your vote here as to whether she’ll win or not. I’d say the odds are about 50/50, personally.

Yes. She will, and probably take home rookie of the year honors.

While anything can happen, I'm guessing no, too. If she puts herself in contention enough, that blind squirrel may just find a nut. But she's not a clutch competitor , and I don't think that will change.

I say she will. It is probably too much to ask that her idiot parents will stay away, but here's hoping anyway. Once she wins, she is going to take off like a rocket.

Not likely, but she will play well and be in contention several times at least. She's going to have to painfully LEARN how to win. She'll win in 2010.

By the way, I have Shin in my fantasy league - a steal in the sixth round.

If the field is weak to mediocre, that is, Paula, Morgan, Lorena and Stacy aren't entered, and if the course is relatively flat with wide fairways and little rough, Bubbles might get lucky and shed the horse collar.

There is no way that Winless Wonder Wie would ever be even money to win a tournament in 2009.

It is axiomatic that the best indication of something occurring is if that something has occurred before.

Since Bubbles is still winless after all these years, the true odds of her winning an LPGA event are probably more like ten to one.

Unfortunately Michelle couldn't make a four foot putt when she was fourteen and still can't at nineteen. She is talking about playing a "full schedule" in 2009...she may play ten tournaments when the other players are playing twenty five. As long as she does the part time student and golfer, she will not win any tournaments.

I'm going to think "positive" and predict that Michelle Wie will win a ladies event in 2009.

Wie is probably going to start off with a good mental attitude seeing that she performed well in Q-School but she may improve as the season progresses and she starts to grind.

Then again, she might just call in sick...

If Michelle is able to conquer that six inches between the ears, then she may win a tournament in 2009. Unfortunately, her parents are going to be sticking to her like fly paper. If she shoots par or more in the first round in Hawaii, we shall see if she can recover. She has a lot of negative baggage to overcome.

Concerning comment from ALEX. Let's look at facts. Paula, Morgan and Stacy were ALL entered in the SBS. Michelle beat Paula by 7, Stacy by 8, and Morgan by 10. That is strokes, duh! She beat the No. 2 player in the world by 4. I think she proved you wrong. Angela Stanford is the hottest player on tour right now. She rarely makes a mistake. Give her credit. And Michelle came in second to the hottest player right now...which is pretty darn good. I can't wait for Michelle to play again. I will be watching.

Iris,

Fact: Bubbles has played this course much more than any other player in the tournament.

Fact: Bubbles had a hometown gallery rooting for her.

Fact: Bubbles had a three shot lead with seven to play.

Fact: Bubbles CHOKED again as only she knows how.

Fact: Bubbles is still winless after about 65 professional events, and is likely to remain winless in the foreseeable future.
