Like exotic street food with your golf? The eight best worldwide destinations for it

These days it’s pretty easy to find a five-star restaurant just about anywhere in the world. But often times the most savory meals are the spontaneous ones (also dished up on the cheap). When I was in Rabat, we had attended a gala with the Prince for some pretty swanky cuisine. But I’ve got warmer memories from a rather random evening two nights later when we headed out into the outskirts of town and ate at an outdoor butcher shop, where alley cats were jumping out of bushes trying to get a piece of our meat.

So in that spirit, here’s a seriously salivating article from a good friend and colleague of mine, Terry Ward over at WorldHum.com, part of the Travel Channel Network.

Terry is abroad more than anyone I know, as is demonstrated from this impressive list she’s compiled on her favorite destinations for street food. Click here for the article. She certainly writes with, as we used to call them when I worked at Applebee’s, “sizzle words". I haven’t been able to read through the whole thing in one sitting without having to grab a quick snack.

Destinations she covers range from Cheju Island to Zanzibar. But a select few are great golf destinations too, like Marrakech, Ho Chi Minh City and even Berlin has some reputable metro area golf courses.

I personally had a chance to experience some Berlin street grub coinciding with a golf trip last June, where I dodged fireworks in the street (during the Euro Cup finals) chowing down on my own spicy sausage sandwich around the corner from my hostel on the east side.

To add a few of my favorite street food not included in the article…I really enjoy Amsterdam’s hot, chocolate-covered waffles and Malaysia’s fried bananas. I’m also a huge fan of the Czech Republic’s sausage stands. Their sausage link sandwiches, which are four links, spicy mustard and grilled onions, are about $2 and I could eat them every day. Add a .5l can of Pilsner Urquell to it, and you’ve got my signature breakfast when I lived over there.

I want to add another city to the list, but it’s a domestic one: Austin. On practically every street corner downtown and on South Congress there are little food stands serving Tex-Mex out of old vans and RVs. They’re cooked to order, are dished up piping hot and spicy, and you can usually fill up for under $4. I can never seem to pass one without getting at least a taco or two. I haven’t played much golf down here yet, but hopefully at the golf clubs, the cart girls serve queso dip out of the beverage cart…

Wow, from a job at Applebees all the way to dining with the Prince of Rabat! Now that's what I call "movin' on up!" :-)
