I lived abroad for a time while Reagan was in
office, and he was almost universally unpopular, too.
You'd get the same sort of "What's wrong with him?" questions. It was very nice living abroad while Clinton was in office, because even if people didn't agree with him, at least they didn't think he was an idiot.

The damage W has done to the US image and standing abroad cannot be overstated, especially after 9/11, when nearly the entire world was with us. An unprecidented opportunity to unite the world, completely squandered.

I have many friends overseas and I don't think I've ever seen such a positive reaction. Although a few countries were staunch Bush supporters (Philippines comes to mind), for the most part the last 3 years has taken a toll on our image worldwide.

Hopefully we will reverse that although it's going to be an uphill battle for sure.

I agree, Bush is terrible, not just for our image, but also for what we've become. At least we can't get much worse given all our other strengths. I hope the next president, Obama, will be more practical, proactive, and intelligent than his weak predecessor.
