Hon Min's Brookside Golf Course reader review has the memories pouring back!

I’m always sure to check the reader reviews of golf courses on our WorldGolf.com network, looking to see if anyone’s recently reviewed a course I’ve played in my travels.

I use it as a sort of barometer really, ensuring that despite my lofty status as an internet golf writer, I’m still grounded and speaking consistently with You: the golfing proletariat.

I especially perk up when I see a new entry from a course I played growing up, and Hon Min’s review of Brookside Golf Course near my hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan brought back some great memories.

Min rated Brookside 1/5 stars, so it’s nice to see little has changed at Brookside since we would frequent it as adolescent knuckleheads about a decade ago.

It’s design is uninteresting in some parts, unfair in others. The rough and fairway are indistinguishable from each other, about the length of when you just had your front yard mowed. Our high school would have matches against Saline here, and when the coach would give a speech about the course before we teed off, he said, “Brookside only has one cut of fairway - a bit like Augusta National really.”

Which, in essence, is like saying your rusted, old Chevy is like a Formula One car because it has no rims. That ridiculous line still comes up when I get together with my old golf team.

Now, Brookside also cost us around $8 when we couldn’t sneak on any country clubs or the U of M course, so you get what you pay for. Along with Huron Hills, this is the place you go in the Ann Arbor area when you are in search of golf at its cheapest and most basic, but every town needs a course like that - so sometimes 1/5 stars isn’t such a bad thing.

Anyone else play a golf course in Ann Arbor? Review it and make my day, eh? Click here.
