Sports writers under attack! First Ron Mon now Mariotti

Wednesday June 21, 2006 | 09:35:28 pm 259 words, 5870 views

First rule of the “Op Ed” world: If you’re gonna dish it, better be ready to eat it.

TravelGolf.com’s own playground spat has Chris Baldwin calling blogger Ron Mon a teacher’s pet for his remarks on Balls Out’s latest post.

On a more serious scale, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is calling Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti a “fag” for his write up’s on the Sox pitching.

Guillen is giving the whole “well in my country, ‘fag’ doesn’t mean what it does here” defense.

Actually Ozzie, like many words in English (and Spanish), “fag” has several meanings of varying offense. You can call your buddy at a bar a “fag” for not hitting on a girl and - while in bad taste - can probably get away with it. But if you ever call someone that in front of a zillion reporters, guess what? You’re toast.

In typical Guillen fashion, he defended his attack rather apologize to Mariotti or to any of the audience he’s offended.

Guillen could have just called Mariotti a “pansy“, which I’ve been dubbed twice in a matter of hours for backing the LPGA (once by my Zen-like boss, the same boss Ron Mon is courting on the blog boards)

As for Baldwin v. Ron Mon, perhaps Chris’ hate mail has run dry and he needs his fix, so he’s back on the offensive.

That being said, Ron Mon has demonstrated his mastery of the suck-up. Now it’s time to see his battle scribe!

By the way. . .how come no one ever goes after Dot Wong?

I'll go after Dot Wong. Dot Wong is too uncontroversial. How about that far an attack on Dot Wong?

I'm glad he didn't apologize for using the word "fag"; why should he? Oh, yeah, we've all been enjoined to be politically correct by Baal.

May I please be allowed to speak?

Let me just say this: You guys don't want me, you don't want any part of sweet, little me.

... Dot Wong ...

Dot

You can't answer a charge of being too uncontroversial with "May I please be allowed to speak?" What about a prediction? Michelle Wie will/will not win the US Women's Open.

For what it's worth, I have no idea what Jay Mariotti's sexual preference is (although I can't say I'd be shocked if Ozzie's label is accurate). What I CAN tell you is that he is one of the biggest a--holes in either industry - sports AND journalism. He has an ego of Bonds-ian proportions. And on top of that, he simply ain't that good a writer.

I would like to go on record with the following: Chris Baldwin is a marvelously controversial blogger, and deserves all my admiration.

Is it possible that Ron Mon is a fan of rock groups starting with his last name, and just got Mike and Mark confused?

===================

Are you saying Ron Mon likes to monkey, err, Monkee around?

BTW, Mike Nesmith is no relation, sadly. I could use some of that Liquid Paper dough!
