A mid-summer golf round with Tom Brady - NFL's "Goldenboy"

Tom Brady is once again dumbfoundingly, quietly having a better year than Peyton Manning, Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, EVERYONE!

Tommy is the best QB in the NFL hands down.

And he’s also the only NFL player, make that remotely famous person (not counting Fingers the Starter at the neighorhood muni. . .he’s more of a local legend) I’ve played a round of golf with.

Of course, this was back in his University of Michigan days where naturally, he was overshadowed in Ann Arbor by some high school hotshot who went on to be one of the most dissappointing recruits ever to don a UM jersey, Yankee uniform, and probably Cowboy Star, too.

But the round with Tommy was a blast. I had met up with someone on the UM hockey team there, and he nonchalantly asked if a few of his “buddies” could play. Any kid born and raised in Ann Arbor would more accurately refer to the starting QB at Michigan as “God” or “The Chosen One” (this reference however become defunct after the John Navarre Era).

I hate to break it to any Tommy-haters eagerly anticipating the first news of any misconduct on his part when the spotlight’s turned off, or waiting for someone from his past to come out and say, “ya, he’s a real jerk in person. . .ran over my cat with his fancy SUV!”

But the guy’s a class-act, and pretty sharp with the sticks, too. Probably shot in the low-40s for the nine we played from the back tees. The only dirt on the guy is we played as a fivesome. . .publicist—try and soften that up!

All in all, he was cool as heck to me, just a Sophomore in high school, who was a little awestruck playing with four varsity athletes for the Maize ‘n Blue. He and the others made me feel like one of the guys, actually remembered my name throughout the round (who doesn’t have a brain fart the second after you’re introduced to your partner for the day? By the 2nd tee you’re calling him, ‘Hey, Dude’).

Here are some other people I wouldn’t mind playing a round with:

Larry David, Dave Chapelle, Johnny Knoxville, Trey Parker or Matt Stone, Tony Kornheiser (just nine holes), Chris Rock, Elizabeth Hurley (hey, I can teach her) and I guess it’d be cool to play with Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus. . .if the others can’t make it.

Nothing "dumfounding" about it. That Tom Brady remembered your name through nine holes confirms two skills. First, he's got a good memory, and that's especially key for QBs today since they need to recognize a zillion defensive schematics. Second, he's got good leadership skills and poise beyond his years.

Who would YOU rather play for, someone who remembers your name, or someone who scowls at you all game? (Take note Mr. Manning).

Stop the Presses!!! A UM guy who thinks Brady is the best QB...what are the odds?? I guess it depends on your definition of what makes up a great quarterback. Don't get me wrong; I fully appreciate his skills, intelligence, and attitude (HATE the facial hair). But you simply cannot minimize the accomplishments on Manning, Vick, McNabb (who could win it all this year - will that make him best?), and, over a career, Favre. Unlike golf - yawn - QBs are dependent on the performance of 21 other guys (plus kickers). Brady is very good; but best in the NFL? He doesn't even make the top 5.
