Sharp, crisp clothes=bad news for MNF

Tuesday December 28, 2004 | 00:55:19 359 words, 1618 views

A funny thing happened to me while I was watching Monday Night Football this week and doing some long-overdue ironing: my shirts were coming out crisp and smooth. My khakis never had straighter creases in them. The reason? Monday Night Football had yet another boring, meaningless game on. Philly was playing the B-squad and the Rams were trying to win their division with a .500 record. Hasn’t this trend of snoozers gone on too long? When was the last time we saw two of the hottest teams in football play on Monday night down the stretch?

A list of some of the meaningless Monday Night games this year. In parentheses is a game that could have been on Monday night that same week:

Week 7: Bengals vs. Broncos (Colts vs. Jags)
Week 8: Dolphins vs. Jets (Steelers vs. Pats)
Week 13: Cowboys vs. Seahawks (Chargers vs. Broncos)
Week 14: Chiefs vs. Titans (Steelers vs. Jets)

This week we missed out on a Colts vs. Chargers OT thriller (and Marino’s record broken).

The Cowboys, Chiefs and Rams played on Monday Night three times. the 4-11 Dolphins were on twice (although kudos beating the sleeping Pats). Contrarily, since Michael Vick was out last year and the Dirty Birds struggled, the most exciting player in football didn’t see Monday night action.

ABC continues to dwell over their sluggish ratings. Duh! Yes, these teams were all playoff teams last year. But as we all know, all it takes is one injury here and another’s marijuana passion there, to change the entire landscape of the NFL.

So why not instead of deciding the Monday Night schedule before the season, when none of us know that K.C. is about to lay a giant egg, choose the hottest game a couple weeks in advance. Hey, ESPN GameDay can do it, why can’t the NFL? Have you seen Rothlisberger this year? I barely have because I’m in the southeast and Pittsburgh had an off year. I’ve seen the same episode on the World Series of Poker more than I’ve seen 11-4 San Diego

The NFL makes its money off TV. How about giving the fans the game of the week on Monday Night?

I disagree, the network must work with the NFL and schedule the teams they think will be of interest. If it doesn't work out that way is because thats football ( you never know until the season gets underway) you win some and you lose some but I'm sure they are trying to schedule the teams they think will be in contention!

Couldn't agree more. MNF needs to be in a position to change with the flow of the season and find the best match-up. Since MNF is practically and institution and all the teams want to play on Monday Night, I cannot imagine there would be much resistance to this format.
But Brandon, can't you have both super-pressed khakis and a great MNF game?
