Yoyoma, it's obvious that you have never toiled in the service industry. If you had, you would know that these people depend on tips to make a living. Most waitpeople don't even get minimum wage as a salary. They depend on those tips to make ends meet, and if they don't get stiffed, they still have to pay taxes on the tip they DIDN'T get.

I don't leave a good tip if the service is bad. But if service is good, or even adequate, I always leave a decent tip. If the service is outstanding, the tip is excellent as well. Maybe you're just a selfish soul who doesn't really care whether someone else can make a living, just as long as you get yours.

Jake of Clubns says: "The problem with these people, like UP, is that while they are more accepted now, it isn't enough, they will only be satisfied when everyone behaves just like them. Look at his response, criticizing everyone that does not fit into his ideal of a good life, i.e. Christian Conservatism."

Yes, that's called witnessing. If your neighbor's house was on fire, you'd try to pull him out, right?

Not all of us pledge our lives to staying as close to the middle as possible.

I couldn't stand seeing David Duval's name at the top of the leaderboard week after week back in the day, but I looked week after week for his name when it disappeared to. I just couldn't believe it this week, David Duval in striking range, U.S. Open, June of 2009. I'm really glad to see you've come back to where you truly belong David. Good Luck, and god be with you!

The best was when Amy was prego with baby #1 and he had his beeper. Well, it turns out she actually had contractions Saturday night and got some drugs to delay it. It isn't bad to delay it, but they why FIGJAM milked the beeper thing was ridiculous. It was Amy who delayed it and I am sure that she would want him to win and do everything she could to put it off, all that is fine but don't make such a big deal about it.

The point Tony made 3 years ago and was refuted by the Under Par was correct. What UP fails to see is the change in our culture where the heart on their sleeve evangelical Christian is no longer marginalized. For example, Jimmy Carter was a bit of an over the top Christian in his day but now that isn't even considered. For example, people can say they believe in creationism without being laughed out of the room.

The problem with these people, like UP, is that while they are more accepted now, it isn't enough, they will only be satisfied when everyone behaves just like them. Look at his response, criticizing everyone that does not fit into his ideal of a good life, i.e. Christian Conservatism. They have the whole thing worked out, because as soon as you criticize that particular behavior, they claim you are criticizing their religion and you are automatically the jerk. Or you can try the use Bible quotes against them and they will say you can't be a "Cut and Paste Evangelist" or that you can't take one line out of the Bible you have to read it all (although miraculously when they are doing it it is fine!)

Well looking at the list of comments it's easy to see a seperation of Tiger butt kissers and Phil haters. When my son was 10 we were at Harbourtown and just about to load the tram to go back to the car when he spotted Phil. He hollered Mr. Phil.. well phil was at the top of a large group of stairs and instead of waiting on my son to come to him, he came down and gave him his autograph.. What a asssssssss. I'm sure there are numerous accounts of Tiger doing the same...NOT. This rivalry is a media driven rivalry.. I'm not saying they love each other but I'd vitually say that either Tiger or Phil feel the need to spend time to have a sleep over with other players...They both have families..I haven't ever heard (other than the people above whose IQ wouldn't hit 10) say anything bad about Tiger or Phil. As for GQ wow imagine that putting Phil on the most hated while having a full page spread when Tiger was man of the year..Guess we know what camp they are in.

I was on a flight several years ago seated next to a guy who works as a camera for the PGA tour. He told me quite bluntly that Phil is the biggest jerk on the tour, and no one who really knows him likes him one bit.

Nice reporting Al...you're another man making a living "talking" about the work/accomplishments other men/women make...while doing nothing yourself. Mr. Mickelson is a great golfer. No, he doesn't come over to my house for dinner...but I recognize and applaude his efforts.

Phil Mickelson conducts himself with class on the course and represents his sport well. He acknowledges fans and from most accounts he treats tournament volunteers & others with courtesy. He provides people with an exciting brand of golf and I think most fans would agree he always gives it his all. Win or lose, he handles himself with grace. I'm yet to see him swear, throw a club, berate a spectator, curse a tournament official, or in any other way disrepect the game.

Compare him to a lot of others in major sports today and he looks pretty good.

He is a great ambassador for the game and I'm just not interested in this hear-say about his private life or how he's not really sincere. And whatever takes place in his private life is his own business and not ours.

He represents this great sport with honor and I don't think you can ask anymore than that.

who cares? it's ludicrous that tips are based on a percentage anyways. Just because I choose to eat the $10 burger should the next guy that eats the $30 steak receive better service? if you ask me how hard do wait staff actually work? it's a miracle if most of them even refill your $3 coke without being asked. if you ask me, most servers in restaurants do the very minimum and expect something extra for doing a crappy job? if food servers are able to pull in more income than other jobs such as policemen, teachers, nurses, firemen, etc(which is reality at some pricey, busy or swanky restaurants) than something is definitely wrong with the culture of "gratuity"

Who cares, really? He's a pig somedays, other days he's just a robot. He does not speak for all Republicans. Most don't even like him. Take a poll, and see for yourself. He can spew his venon all he wants. His words don't make him anything special to me. Heck, look at Westboro Baptist Church. He supports them, and their cause. Look that up!! It's a well known fact he hangs up on folks when he wants to belittle them on air for his rating's. He has that right. And you have the right to hate him, turn the dial or just laugh at him. And I have one question. Why do so many people hate Bush?

In response to: Stop televising Arnold Palmer, part 2

Hideo Kobe [Visitor] · http://volunteerteachthailand.org
As another posting on this site suggests, golf is bankrupt in the charisma bank. If there were more incarnations of the Chi's Chi's, Trevino's, Player's of the past, a diminished Palmer wouldn't be necessary. But there just aren't.

I think big money is largely to blame for this.

Yesterday, here in Bangkok, I was a passenger in the car reserved for British Open winner Paul Lawrie for the Royal Trophy event here. He won one major tournament and that made his career.

I don't think golfers think much about careers anymore. They don't have to. They think about one good year or two and then they are set for life.

Professional golfers not that long ago were forced to think about careers and adopting a style that set them apart. Now they don't have to think that way at all.

In response to: Tis a shame Europe's top golfers won't support their own tour

Hideo Kobe [Visitor] · http://volunteerteachthailand.org
As a writer living in Bangkok, I am covering the current Royal Trophy featuring Team Europe and Team Asia. Team Europe has only 4 players in the Official world Golf Rankings including Paul Lawrie (165) and Johan Edfors (171). So it seems the author's point is valid. Expanding the issue, we could ask, for all the top ranked players (including U. S. players) what are the obligations to support golf worldwide?

When in Rome....

Wherever you go, your subject to the local culture and ideas of how things work and are. They came to be after all due to the local status quo. Tiger and all these people who tip poor know it's beneath them and arn't proving anything by not doing it. Waitstaff in most staes make a few bucks an hour and rely on tips for 90 % of their income. Any of you supporting these idiots should be ashamed, or maybe it's time to work at a restaurant.
